Not Yet Dead

To quote that famous Broadway darling, SPAMALOT:

I am not dead yet
I can dance and I can sing
I am not dead yet
I can do the Highland Fling

I am not dead yet
No need to go to bed
No need to call the doctor
Cause I'm not yet dead.

So, what have I been up to? Weeeeellll... let me tell you...

First off, I quit my job (as mentioned previously). Tuesday 9/25 is my last day. I've accepted a position with BT-INS as a security consultant in the Chesapeake region. I start with them 9/27 and they already have a client lined up for my first couple months. Change is never easy, but I'm looking forward to this one.

Second, I royally hosed my back last week Wed (9/12) and have since been in to see my GP doc once and my orthopedic doc twice. The diagnosis, as of this afternoon, and confirmed by the radiologist who processed by CT Scan on Wednesday, is a full avulsion of the C7. Basically, a small piece broke off of the C7 vertebra (starting at the top of the spine, this would be the 7th vert. down, literally the last one in the cervical section of the spine). The fragment has migrated and embedded into the "soft tissue" - looks like it travelled about an inch or so before doing that. Luckily, it was not an avulsion of the root, so things could be much worse.

The good news is that no surgery is required and I can return to lifting. The bad news is that it will probably be easily aggravated, resulting in muscle spasms. I'm going to follow-up with her office on Monday and see if having it removed would be a big deal (I hope not), since I don't relish having back pain for the rest of my life...

As to how I hurt myself... well, I did Turkish get-ups with my 24kg kettlebells the day I got hurt... however, I think I may have partially avulsed the C7 doing heavy squats last Spring and it may have just now snapped off cleanly (I distinctly remember being sore in this area of the spine a few months back). I'll have to be careful in the future.

Third news bit (which I may have blogged about already)... Hanna and I are going to London over Thanksgiving break! We'll be visiting a couple friends over there who we met on the Contiki tour to Europe last July/August. This will be our first trip to London, and we're very excited about it!

Ok, that's probably enough for now, especially considering that I need a better chair for my back now.

cheers!
